I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump. Book after book that just couldn’t quite hold my attention. I would pick a book up, put it down, pick it back up again. It wasn’t that they weren’t good – they were – I just wasn’t connecting somehow.
But then I picked up Simmer Down this past Sunday and I blew through it in a day! I loved the characters from the very start – Nikki has had a rough year and given up so much to support her family. She’s running the family food truck and has finally found the perfect spot to park it.
And THEN Callum James parks his food truck next to hers, breaking Maui food truck etiquette, which Nikki learned the hard way. Nikki goes next door to let him know, and Callum is having none of it. The good truck war is born!
Ahhh! Nikki and Callum’s food truck war goes viral and they decide to face off at a local food festival. But along the way they get to know one another, and they realize there might be more to their relationship than hatred. But, the festival frowns on competitors working together in any way, so if they get caught being friendly it can ruin everything.
Simmer Down is by far one of my favorite books of 2020. It’s just what October 2020 needs FOR SURE. It dazzles with chemistry and banter! The characters have beautiful depth, and Smith handles the topics of love and loss, showing readers why vulnerability is so important in life, despite how hard it can be.
If you’re in need of a little pick me up, or a distraction, or just an amazingly good book, this is it!
